This guide assumes you have the Redmi Note 3 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, also called the Redmi Note 3 Pro. The codename of the phone is Kenzo.
You need to install the latest TWRP recovery using your computer and ADB. Next you will need to download the NitrogenOS ROM and the OpenGapps (Google Apps), links for which can be found here. You have to use GAPPS Mini or above, if you need the Face Unlock option.
Please take some time to read about the known bugs on the XDA thread before you decide to install the ROM.
Flash the ROM using TWRP, and then the GAPPs file. Let the phone boot, it may take a while because it is building the cache. The ROM is running on Android 8.1 Oreo and has all the features in the OS including password autofill, Picture-in-Picture, etc, and even has the latest security patch.
Installing the ROM isn’t enough though. You still need to know how to enable Face Unlock on Redmi Note 3.
Go to the Settings > Security and Location > Smart Lock menu. If you don’t see Face Unlock in the Smart Lock screen, that is because you have not signed in to your Google account. You see the Face Unlock used by this ROM is made by Google, that’s why you need to sign in to the account.
Once you have signed in, the Smart Lock screen should have few more options, including the Face Unlock. Add your face as a means to authenticate the screen unlock, and it will work.
If you think that Face Unlock is not working on Redmi Note 3, check again. Look carefully at the padlock icon on the lockscreen, if it is locked then it didn’t work. But almost certainly it will be working. So why is the phone still on the lockscreen, and why do I have to swipe up to unlock the device. Shouldn’t Face Unlock take me directly to the previous screen?
You have to manually enable the auto-unlock option in NitrogenOS. Open the settings, and click on Personalization and then on the Lock Screen option. Here you will find a toggle which is called Face auto unlock. Enable this and the phone will automatically take you to the previous screen, when you unlock it using Face Unlock.
Does Face Unlock work well if you wear glasses?
This is a hit and miss. If your glasses are reflecting something bright, Face Unlock won’t work. So, you may need to turn away from the light source, or adjust your spectacles to compensate. The improve face detection helps slightly.
Is Face Unlock faster than the fingerprint scanner?
No, it takes about half a second more, and you still need to wake up the device by pressing the power button. But hey, at least you have the feature on the phone. You can enable the double tap to wake feature from the Settings > Personalization > Device Features > Advanced menu, if you don’t want to use your fingerprint scanner.
Now, you can proudly boast to your friends or even teach them how to enable Face Unlock on Redmi Note 3. Who says you have to buy a Redmi Note 5 Pro or Zenfone Max Pro or Realme 1 to have this feature?
