The Xiaomi Mi 8 with Snapdragon 845 has been officially launched today in China, at an event honoring the company’s 8th anniversary. The device was launched alongside the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE (the World’s first Snapdragon 710 phone) and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.
Today also marks the launch of MIUI 10, on which the Mi 8 runs. The phone follows the 2018 trend with an “original Notch display design”, for the 6.21-inch AMOLED screen which is made by Samsung. The display has a resolution of 2248 x 1080 pixels, 404 ppi, with a contrast ratio of 60000:1, an aspect ratio of 18:7:9, an 88.5% screen to body ratio, 600 nits brightness, and supports Always-On display and DCI-P3 color gamut.
The Notch on the Xiaomi Mi 8 is significantly larger than some devices (like the OnePlus 6), because it houses the selfie lens, an earpiece, proximity sensor, an infrared lighting module and an infrared lens.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, with an Adreno 670 GPU, and will be available in 6GB/8GB RAM variants with 64GB/128GB/256GB storage options. MIUI 10 is based on Android 8.1 Oreo, and features a new recents panel which takes up the entire screen to show a preview of each app that is open in the background. The device has a rear placed fingerprint scanner.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports vertically aligned dual rear cameras with 2 x 12MP dual pixel sensors (a telephoto lens and a wide-angle lens) which support autofocus, portrait (bokeh mode), AI scene detection,4-axis OIS (optical image stabilization) and 1.4μm pixels size. The selfie lens on the Mi 8 is a 20 MP camera, which has a secondary Infrared lens for face unlock in the dark and low light environments, and an f/2.0 aperture, and supports 1.8μm pixels size.
The device is backed by a 3,400 mAh battery which supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 over USB Type-C. Connectivity options on the phone includes 4G LTE, VoLTE, 4 x 4 MIMO, WiFi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4GHz/5.GHz Wifi and 2x 2 MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0. The Xiaomi Mi 8 is the World’s first phone with dual frequency GPS. The Mi 8 does not have a 3.5mm audio jack.
Sensors on the phone include a distance sensor, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, an electronic compass, a vibration motor, a barometer, a hall sensor and an ambient light sensor.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 with Snapdragon 845 has been priced at 2699 RMB, which is about Rs. 28,400, for the base variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage .
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is similar to the Xiaomi Mi 8 with Snapdragon 845, but has a translucent cover, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and 3D Face unlock. The phone has been priced at 3699 RMB, which is about Rs. 38,900, for the variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage .
